A PNS (civil servant) from the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) recently admitted to singing karaoke with a briber at the Raia Club in Jakarta. The briber in question is none other than former Minister of Social Affairs, Juliari Batubara.
Juliari Batubara was arrested in December 2020 for accepting bribes related to the distribution of COVID-19 aid to the poor. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rp 500 million (approximately $35,000).
The PNS involved in the scandal testified in court that he had received gifts and money from Juliari Batubara in exchange for facilitating the distribution of the aid. He confessed to singing karaoke with the former minister at the Raia Club, where they also allegedly discussed the bribery scheme.
It's unclear whether the karaoke session was a part of the bribery or just a casual activity between the two. Either way, it's a sad reflection of the corruption that still plagues Indonesia's government.
